Frequently Asked Questions:

Some of quesions we're often asked about the metalman swim series are answered below. If you query isn't covered, get in touch and we'd love to answer it for you.
What kind of wetsuit should i wear?
Any wetsuit which covers the torso and legs is suitable for a swim like this. There are specific swimming designed wetsuits often used by triathletes but a surfing wetsuit is more than adequate to keep you warm.   IIt is important that the suit is a good fit as a loose fitting wetsuit is very slow and difficult to swim in. NO WETSUIT NO RACE.

Is this race a commercial event?
No. It is run by a voluntary committee. Any proceeds left over after the costs of running the event are distributed between the voluntary partners of the event, Sligo Kayak Club and Sligo Surflifesaving Club. 2015 saw €1,200 donated to these two local clubs. Another portion of any excess goes towards purchase of equipment to run the event including inflatable buoys and marine radios.

Do I need to be a member of triathlon ireland, swim ireland or any other groups to take part?
No. The event is run and insured as a stand alone event, no membership of any club/society required.

I have never done an open water swim before can i take part?
In this case you should do the "Sprint" league which starts off with a very manageable 500m swim. Don't forget we will have our rescue boats and kayakers on hand should you need any assistance

Can i get a refund if i miss the races?
No. Refunds will not be issued in these circumstances.
